In a surprise move, the Yankees have acquired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers according to Buster Olney. The move should save Detroit some bucks and might signal they're out of it for '08.

Nice pickup for New York, plus he's a Type A free agent if they want to risk offering him arbitration.

I don't see that this move necessarily means the Tigers are claiming to be out of it. IRod wasn't doing a whole lot besides keep his average up, so I would agree with others' sentiment in that they might be fine with Inge catching and a backup from somewhere else. Since their bullpen was rather shaky this is a decent move by the Tigers to at least try to make it work.

Nice trade. Farnsworth is a ticking time bomb and Marte should be better as the 8th inning guy from here on out. As for Pudge accepting arbitration, I doubt he will. Posada should be able to catch by opening day and I doubt Pudge has interest in being a back up.
