They could take a conservative approach and keep him in the 90-100 pitch count limit. If his arm can't survive that, it won't survive long-term anyway. I think as long as there aren't any warning signs that he'll be out there pitching in september.
There isnt going to be much worry about a CY Young for him until they start scoring for him again and not blowing his leads.....with Webb at 14 wins and Zambrano at 12 and counting, I dont think lil Tim is going to win it with anything under 15 wins.....
Ironically Lincecum is 5th in baseballprospectus Pitcher Abuse Points rankings. He has 10 games with 110+ pitches including 1 game with 122+.
Jon Lester is 10th and Cueto is 20th. Other notables include injury-prone Sheets (3rd) and Nolasco (6th).
TB seems to be very conservative with their pitchers with Garza (1st full season) at 62, Kazmir (injury prone) at 64, Jackson at 78, and Shields at 122. Other notable young pitchers are Jon Sanchez at 68 and Billingsley at 72. I'm not saying that this is the right approach, but theoretically they should be less likely to suffer an arm injury (mechanics are obviously very important also) or a dead arm at the end of the season.
I'd like to see the Giants give The Link (Can I start that nickname now?) the green light down the stretch. See what the kid is made of. Sure, don't go crazy with him and lower his pitches a little. But the more he pitches, the better and more valuable he should become.
How about a guy like Lester? Is it possible that the BoSox lower his pitch count to save him for that extra month of pitching in October?

He currently is at 11. I think its very possible to see him get 15 or 16 wins.

Seeing as how Lester has been the Sox best pitcher for the last two months, there's no way he gets shut down. Francona may pay closer to attention to his pitch count, but he will be out there every 5th start until the end.

Well, since a team's objective is usually to win, and the Giants feared that pitching Lincecum for the whole season may hurt his longevity... they would rather shut him down, I'd think.
Not if he is contending for the Cy. That would be horrible PR for a team that needs attendance. In the end, the Giants are in the business of winning games and selling tickets. Sure they want to be cautious with their investment in players but they also don't want to piss off the fans that they are feeding off of.

or piss off their best player
So you think shutting Lincecum down is going to piss off Rich Aurilia? Why?
