Young Guns to be Shutdown

Postby roid_popper » Tue Jul 29, 2008 5:59 pm

There are a lot of young pitchers making a nice impact this season (e.g. Lincecum, Billingsley, Volquez, Lester). Which of the young stud pitchers do you foresee getting shutdown at some point this season? Do teams in contention shutdown young players at all to save them for the playoffs (i.e. will Lester be saved)? How many years in the league before players stop getting pampered (i.e. does Lincecum get full starts the rest of the season unlike his rookie year)? I like the idea of dumping the youngsters before they reach their innings wall.

Any predictions of who will be limited going down the stretch?

I don't think either Billingsly or Lester gets shutdown early.

Mostly the guys on a poor team will get shut down:
Volquez
Cueto
Jurrjens
Kershaw
Sanchez
Morrow (maybe)
Lincecum (maybe)

I'll tell you this much, if I owned Lincecum or Volquez and was locked into a playoff spot in a H2H, I'd be shopping them right now.

Billingsly is in his what... third of fourth year? I don't think he's a risk to get shut down.

Kershaw might be shut down but it depends on where the Dodgers are in September and on Brad Penny's progress if he comes off the DL.

If Timmay is in contention for the Cy though would they really shut him down? I have him in a keeper, not like I could just trade him away like that.

Timmay is the only reason people show up to Giants games. I doubt he'll be shut down.

Well, since a team's objective is usually to win, and the Giants feared that pitching Lincecum for the whole season may hurt his longevity... they would rather shut him down, I'd think.

Not if he is contending for the Cy. That would be horrible PR for a team that needs attendance. In the end, the Giants are in the business of winning games and selling tickets. Sure they want to be cautious with their investment in players but they also don't want to piss off the fans that they are feeding off of.
