ROY!!! candidates

Postby Bwanna » Sat Jul 26, 2008 3:37 pm

Didn't see a thread dedicated to ROY discussions, so I thought I'd start a general one.

Most are expecting Longoria to run away with the AL ROY, and I just saw this post on the Rangers blog:
Mike Hindman wrote:The national media has already anointed Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria as the AL Rookie of the Year.

They're wrong.

Chris Davis: .294 / .341 / .694 / 1.035
Evan Longoria: .276 / .354 / .526 / .880
-- advantage Davis

Chris Davis: 9 HR in 85 at-bats (1 every 9.44 at-bats -- a Ruthian figure)
Evan Longoria: 19 HR in 333 at-bats (1 every 17.93 at-bats)
-- advantage Davis

Chris Davis: 18 RBIs (0.75 per game -- 122 RBIs over 162 games)
Evan Longoria: 61 RBIs (0.66 per game -- 107 over 162 games)
-- advantage Davis

Chris Davis: AL West
Evan Longoria: AL East
-- advantage Longoria

Davis has to do it for longer than a month. While I think he will be very close to or maybe even better than Longoria, I think the answer is pretty clear so far.

The rate differences mean a lot less when Evan Longoria has been producing since April. :-S

Taylor Teagarden is averaging 1 HR every 6 at-bats. Chris Davis, eat yer heart out! :-D

obviously right now rate differences dont make up for 1 month v 3 months and its longoria far and away.

although, if davis maintained his exact pace from here on out, and longoria did the same, they would both end up with 31 HRs exactly. Of course, Davis cant hold this pace. But if he does just close (say a .900 ops and 13 more HRs) there could be a contest.

also, joba is still a rookie right? if he can finish really well he could get into it.

right now the odds are obviously way in longoria's favor.

i dont even know whats going on in the nl.

Exactly Davis has too few AB's to win IMO

About Davis vs Longoria? I just saw that crazy post on the Rangers blog and thought I'd use it as forum fodder.

The NL candidates that come to mind are Soto and Volquez, maybe Fukedome?

Thoughts?

Davis has been spectacular, if he had started in April it might be interesting

one thing to also consider is Longoria is also playing for a 1st place team, hitting in the middle of the lineup and playing Gold Glove caliber defense.

Also to the NL- Volquez is NOT a rookie
