I usually hate when someone holds the door open for me when I'm still 50 feet away. Picking up my pace to keep the person from waiting takes more effort than opening the door myself does.
At the same time, I've been on the other side of the situation when I look back as I'm going through the door to see if I need to hold it for someone. Sometimes the only person will still be far away from the door but, once I've made eye contact, I can't really let the door go on them.
