those jars have a freshness seal. they only pop if they've been previously opened, in this case implying that the jam was not "fresh".

She's a clear jar. If someone had been sampling the goods, there'd be a big hunk of her insides missing, and likely some stray peanut butter left behind.

There's a discussion about the mechanics of the joke here.

One guy explains the joke
If you take an unopened jar of baby food, the center of the metal lid is held down by the vacuum, and pressing it does nothing. When you open the jar, you get a sucking sound. If you then put the lid back on, the center of the lid is now raised, and if you press on it and let go, you get a soft popping sound. It's more of a double pop, once when you press it, once when you release. I think it's the sound of the metal flexing, not air - you can get it to happen even if the lid is separated from the jar. From his hand position, I'd guess he pressed down on her lid and heard the pop.

Think the problem isn't so much with the mechanics, its the attention span of readers like me. I read the first pane, figured he was going to get some of that jelly and the button popped when he opened her up. Why he couldn't just do the push test before this point just makes no sense. Even if he didn't push test her, you can usually see that the seal is raised so it shouldn't have come as such a surprise. I think the whole thing is just a weak excuse at promoting spousal abuse and that just doesn't make me laugh.
