I was thinking almost the same thing when I saw everyone change their profile pics to stop child abuse. Not to be cynical, but what was the point? It's not as if people were giving money to a cause against abuse or revealing that, in fact, child abuse is considered a bad thing by the general public. It just seems like a way for someone to pat themselves on the back for doing a good deed while doing absolutely nothing to stop child abuse.

people want to feel good about themselves without having to put in any actual time/money/effort. they delusion themselves into thinking that what they're doing is helping when it isn't changing a damn thing.

Get a yellow bracelet, put a ribbon magnet on your car, wear a pink accessory, and grow a moustache. Feel good about self. Lather, rinse, repeat.

pretty much, but at least the bracelets and magnets usually require a donation to get. changing your facebook profile picture accomplishes literally nothing.
