I think you're latching on an age-old stereotype of British humor, like the British stereotype of Americans not understanding irony. There are of course American comedies that do make good usage of irony that works better in an American cultural context.
By the same token, there are a few British comedies that are more straightforward and LOL-worthy. Here's the best bit of a hilarious episode of Coupling
that had me in stitches. Kind of have to understand the character of Jeff Murdoch to fully appreciate it, but it's good enough to show people who aren't acquainted to the show.
