Yeah, that was one of my favorites, too. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it... :-b

Wow, a physics and nautical nerd at the same time.

:-D

It is a sweet pic though.

You're just jealous of all the chicks I get by knowing this stuff. ;-) :^

I'm amazed not so much by the force applied but by their ability to keep the ship from turning over in response to the force!

With the amount of mass that those ships have below the water line there's no way it's turning over. That would take some serious force. :-o

It just moved the ship 20 feet!

And, apparently, the ship isn't even moving sideways. Weird, but I believe this guy - he's apparently something of an expert in the field.

Facts

I think I like the story better if the ship moves. But then you'd have to think that if it did, everything in that ship would be flying around every time they fired a broadside, and what practical purpose would that serve?

One other interesting fact I ran across checking this out: the turrets in the Iowa class aren't even attached to the ship. They rest on rollers, and if the ship turns over the turrets will fall out.

I will say, though, that it looks exactly like the ship is moving. That's precisely the kind of water pattern I would expect to see if the ship were being shoved sideways. Who knows.

ya i almost posted about how crazy it is that the guns moved the boat enough to create that much wake, but then i decided that the wake was probably just from the muzzle blast.

Wikipedia has a good pic of this effect on the water from above. I think THIS PIC shows what that "sideways shove" wave is pretty well.
