My buddy offered me the complete Seinfeld series on burned DVD's for trade, is this illegal or is just selling them?

Trade as in permanently? Then yes. If you are borrowing them then no.

Well burning DVDs of copyrighted materials and distributing them is illegal ....
Sharing downloaded (not-paid-for) digital versions of copyrighted materials is illegal...

Wait...so your friend has the complete DVD set, and a DVD burner, but he won't just burn the DVDs for you, he's making you trade him something? haha...please tell me you guys are like 13-years-old.
