Personally I would be expecting an ERA's in the 4's with some control issues. that might be optimistic also.
I did pick him up in my 12 team keeper pts league (there are some good injured pitchers available also) and just hope to get some mediocre pts out of him this year. And enough confidence to keep him.
I'd wait until after a few rehab assignments to try to gauge how he might do. He could be the best pitcher in the Cardinal rotation for the last month or so, or could have another couple set backs. It's 50/50, IMO.
I am being fairly optomistic on carpenter as I have picked him up in two leagues. For some pitchers, they would consider yesterday's rehab outing a very sussessful one, but carpenter knows the dominance that he had and he knows he isn't quite there yet, and so he wasn't satisfied with 4 scoreless innings. I believe when he comes back in a couple of weeks that he could help most fantasy pitching staffs alot more than anyone else coming up or that's on waivers now.
Rotoworld Reports: Chris Carpenter allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings Friday in a rehab start for Triple-A Memphis. Carpenter threw four scoreless innings in his last rehab start at Double-A, but showed better command tonight. He issued just one walk while striking out five and recorded ten groundball outs. 53 of his 78 pitches went for strikes. He is scheduled to make another rehab start on Wednesday, but after Mitchell Boggs' poor showing tonight, the Cardinals will understandably be tempted to rush Carpenter back into the rotation. We could see him in a Cardinals' uniform, and possibly on the mound, Wednesday in Atlanta.
I thought there would be a pretty good chance that he would be back before mid-August, but not this soon.
That organization is a joke if they rush him back after only 2 MiL starts. If they had any sense, they'd have Carp closing games for them the rest of this year - it'll build up his arm strength for next season, and would bolster a bullpen that has blown 22 games. It's not like Mozeliak made any moves before the season to improve the team, or will make any moves now. So why risk throwing Carp back into the rotation after only 2 starts?

I've been saying that for a month now....and getting the idea shot down mostly. I agree that it's the best idea for the team, his arm, and their playoff chances. The Cardinals rotation is far from their biggest problem....so why not leave it be and add a stud closer?
Who knows maybe they add Carpenter to the rotation and move someone like Looper to the bullpen.
