poor numbers in AAA this year (4.24 ERA, 1.36 WHIP)
@toronto is not an easy matchup
oakland is not providing run support lately

FWIW,

His last 10 games don't look too bad

I picked him up and I think he'll be good for spot starts....but the walk rate over the last 10 games is still bad.

i looked at his #s in minors this season and they're not very good. is there a reason why he's such a big deal?

Yeah his K potential suggests that he has an out pitch, and the fact that he seems to pitch as a stud or a dud and I'm hoping for the stud. Also since the jays haven't hit all season it's a good matchup. Moreover, since this is the first time he will pitch in the majors, maybe he can fool the hitters for a while with that out pitch, and be an end of the year stud. It's a worthwhile gamble.

This guy couldn't even handle Triple A hitters, what makes people think he can handle major league hitters??

I predict he'll be back on everybody's WW's by the end of the month...

I'm wondering the same thing.
He'll walk as many guys as he strikes out.

Fortunately for people starting him tonight, they barely have to worry about that.. the Blue Jays have been brutal against both lefties and 'unknown' pitchers they haven't seen before for a couple of seasons now.. Oakland probably picked the best possible opponent for his first game

It's not like he was totally over his head in AAA. He had a some great starts where he was just dominant and other starts where he didn't have any command and was shelled. To me, this suggests he has the stuff to get it done at the major league level but lacks polish and experience.

IMO, he'll have starts where he'll be as dominant as any rookie pitcher this year and other starts where he'll just suck much like Cueto, Kershaw, Eveland, and Scherzer this year. You gotta try to pick out the good starts and hope for the best.

Not a horrible start, 6inn 4H 4R 4ER 1HR 2BB 4K

After the HR in the 1st he seemed to have settle down, we'll see how he does in his next start against TB, but no reason to think he wont have similar if not a better game....
