Blanton has a career ERA+ of exactly 100. He is not exactly a groundball pitcher pitching in a bandbox. He is still relatively young so I can see him having a couple of nice seasons but I doubt his numbers will improve that much overall.

i agree with this assessment. the one thing i will say is that he is essentially a league average innings muncher and players like that have a decent amount of value in MLB. in fact it is alarming how much they are being paid in free agency. that being said, he's cheaper than the free agent alternative.

I wouldn't be so sure, since 2006 his away stats are 5.21 era 1.51 whip. Once he leaves that comfy park and goes to Citizen Bank, it's not going to be pretty. He should be better in the aspect of pitching more innings, but after that it's a toss up for the most part w/ Blanton coming out slightly better.
I guess the Phillies were desperate, and I don't blame them, because who knows about Myers and the only thing we know about Eaton is that he sucks.... Nevertheless, Canizares is one of the top prospects in the Phillies' system (though he's still a ways away), and Outman is a decent pitching prospect, especially as an RP for Billy Beane....
WOW! I need to get a job from Billy Beane. He seems to be a master at getting these stud prospects. I knew Adrian Cardenas was rumored to be available with Utley there but to include Outman on top of that. Wow, the A's now have Jemile Weeks, Eric Patterson, & Cardenas to play 2B when/if they let Ellis leave (and it looks like the certainly can now). Still, this gets rid of Pit's Marte for Phi's Cardenas prediction I made just yesterday. Oh well, at least I picked that right guy available.

Maybe.. but I'm not surprised that JP was asleep at the switch again and couldn't pull the trigger on a deal to help the Jays. That was undoubtedly the bigger factor.
You've got a diamond, You've got nine men You've got a hat and a bat, And that's not all..
I don't mind this deal for the Phils. Nothing shipped to the A's was going to make an impact this year. Blanton came cheaper than Burnett or Bedard would have and while he's not as good a pitcher as those two he has no injury concerns and can eat innings for a team. Better than running Eaton out there every 5th day or rushing a prospect who might not be ready. We'll see but at first glance I'll give it a
Hal·la·day, n. 1. every fifth day in Philadelphia. 2. a day of rest for the bullpen. 3. innings eater. 4. doc. 5. ace.
