CLOSING-IN WEEKLY

Image

The new big-deal guy to many people seems to be A's reliever Brad Ziegler and his consecutive scoreless streak entering the league. While that is a pretty big accomplishment, it doesn't change the type of pitcher that Ziegler is when it is all said and done. He has a very deceptive delivery but only has two pitches, his fastball (that tops out at about 87 mph) and his curveball that acts like a slider with his delivery). So, what makes him different than most extreme submarine pitchers? Well, not much, in fact, he has less pure tools than say a Pat Neshek or a Cla Meredith but the difference now is his newness. When the dust settles, Zeigler should find a career in the same mold of deceptive extreme submariners that serve as change-of-pace-relievers like Joe Smith and Chad Bradford if he can stay healthy. He likely will not be the new A's closer of the future and should get hit decently hard once the league catches up to him. Santiago Casilla, Joey Devine, and even the struggling Huston Street all make better long-term closer options.

So is the consensus that Corpas and not Buchholz takes over on Col. WHEN Fuentes is dealt? Would Buch get a shot?

Rockies GM Dan O'Down said that Manny Corpas would be given another chance to close before Taylor Buchholz.
Buchholz was quality in middle relief last season, and this year has been a very effective set-up guy, but the Rockies say they don't want to push him too fast. Corpas hasn't been as effective as Buchholz, but since entering June with a 6.59 ERA, he's posted a 3.50 ERA, lowering his season total to 5.24. Still, Corpas is only 4-for-10 in save opportunities this year, and it's clear that Buccholz is the long-term plan.

I noticed one of these ( :-B ) next to Soria.

Is he really a future rotation guy? He's been lights out so far this season as a closer.

I predict the Manny Corpas experiment will fail quickly.
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

Will Sherrill be traded? It says on ESPN that the Orioles will keep Sherrill. I am hoping that this is true .

I happen to know quite a bit about the Brewers and there is a 0% chance that they give up Gamel for Sherrill. And if you would know something about them, it would be that Torres is the closer, not Gagne. But I'll let is slide. Also, Besides Jeffress, Mark Rogers(WHO IS THE MARK PRIOR OF THE BREWERS), Tony Pena is probably going to be the closer of the future. Even though I hope it is Jeffress, if he stays clean.

The Brewers need to find a place for Gamel very soon. That could be in LF/RF after Cameron is gone but I think Gamel fits best in the AL but its just a thought. I'll agree with you that is doesn't happen though but it would be nice. The Orioles have the pieces to make it happen though. Also, if you look, the player underlined is the acting closer but I think Torres gets a rude awakening in the 2nd half as Gagne gets the job back.
