The latest news IS...that there is no news. But it should be tomorrow.
The latest news on Takashi Saito's elbow is that there is no late news.
Saito underwent an MRI Monday as scheduled, but club officials said the results would not be evaluated until Tuesday by team surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who would issue a diagnosis and course of treatment.
Well, I just picked up Broxton so I'm waiting for Saito's diagnosis. I hate to wish ill on anyone, but he is owned by one of my main rivals in the league, and I wouldn't mind if his relief corps gets a little less dominant (he has Saito, Street, and I traded him Rivera pre-season...d'oh!).
I think it would be very foolish to cut Saito until you know. After all, we are talking about probably the best closer (statistically) in baseball over the last 2+ years. I agree it doesn't sound great, but it is wild speculation that he is done for the year. I can't count the number of times that the speculation, good or bad, has been wrong. It sounds like we will know before baseball resumes Thursday, so hold tight.

After undergoing an MRI, Takashi Saito has been diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
The 38-year-old will rehab the injury for six weeks and then be reevaluated, meaning he's out until at least September. He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, and Jonathan Broxton should certainly be grabbed in every league where available.

As a Saito owner I'm going watch the news cycle just to make sure this is widely reported first. However, if the plan truly is six weeks, I'm likely dropping him. Dodgers suck and come September there will be little reason to trot him out there.

this is the worst case scenario for me. I'd rather him be fine, or done for the season. Six weeks means it is a tougher call on what to do w/ him. If you cut him, his rehab will go better than exepcted, and instead of 6 weeks he comes back in 4 weeks, and he dominates the last 6 weeks. If you burn a roster spot on him, those 6 weeks will turn into 8 weeks, and he gets shut down for the season.
Tough, tough call for those of us where roster spots are precious. Hmmm........

Depends who's available. If you've got nothing better available, hang on and see if he's good for the stretch. Kobayashi was available in my league, so I dropped Saito for him.
Another question: Does anyone think the Dodgers might just stick with Broxton, even if Saito comes back (and assuming Broxton pitches well)? Since they were expected to switch to him next year, anyway, it might make sense for them to just let him run with the job.

Broxton is almost a lock for the closer job unless proven otherwise. Kuo and Park haven't been ruled out but Torre fears that with either of them closing, it could jeopardize their effectiveness and health as both have been quite injury prone. Another candidate I'd throw in there for the sake of throwing in there is Cory Wade but he doesn't quite have the plus stuff as Broxton does. Either Kuo, Park, Wade, or Beimel has been mentioned in setting up for Broxton and so, if you're in a holds league, Kuo is a must if he's still out in FA and if not, at least for the ratios.
Saito's timetable surely isn't set in stone and at his age, he could suffer a setback here or there that pushes his return past the start of September. Should Saito return, I think it's still his job to lose, but as far as the remainder of the season goes; Broxton's chances of gaining the closer job in the long term are likely to go up for next season, I'd think.
