Hunter Pence is making it very hard for me to hold on to him

Postby Triplec223 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 3:50 pm

...and I'm an Astros fan. I keep waiting and waiting for this guy to turn it around, but all he's putting out is 1-for-4, 0-for-3, 1-for-5, 0-for-6. At what point do you stop calling it a slump and begin calling it a bad year?

The only reason he's still on my roster is because of what he did in May (.346, 6 HR, 21 RBI, 17 runs, 4 SB). Does anyone think the wrist injury is still bothering him? He did just fine when he came back last season.

I guess this is more of a rant than anything else. I still can't bring myself to drop him, as is the case with many others around the forum from what I've seen. Feel free to contribute to the Pence-bashing or offer some sort of insight as to why he can't buy a hit.

I traded him for Tony Pena Jr. in a I-don't-care league.

That's because I was getting Braun for Berkman on the side. Best part is I never have to start Pence but he's surely worth stashing for cheap in a dynasty league. Besides, I can't get half-decent value out of Harden most times and I never bother to trade him. ;-D

I wasn't too crazy about Pence entering this year but I suppose his strong Spring plus a brilliant May allayed those skeptical beliefs for a while. Pence is kind of like a Corey Hart type that can be feast or famine albeit he tends to draw more walks than Hart. For some reason, probably related to the wrist, he's inducing a good deal of groundballs.

In the same boat. Have him on both my teams, and don't know when I will drop him, but the time is soon approaching. He is riding the bench as it is. No one wants him, as I have offered him around in almost every trade deal I've thrown out there lately.

A few more weeks, and then I cut bait. Might not wait that long.

I wouldn't say that Pence tends to draw more walks than Hart--he only has 3 more this season (and 8 more K's), and last year they had almost identical rates. The big key seems to be that Hart's swing produces fewer groundballs, whereas Pence is consistently around 48%--which makes it hard to sustain good power output.

Overall, I disliked Pence coming into this season and have seen little to disprove that inclination.

Clearly :-b

At least the guy I was giving a hard time to in another thread got the STARTING ss for the Royals 8-o

I think I will be hanging onto him tightly in my dynasty league, that much is for sure...

Man, do you guys remember the fantasy magazines who had him in the top 30 pre-season? I'm not shocked at all by his sophomore slump... doesn't this happen to 75% of good hitters?

I wouldn't say cut bait just yet, but if you have a viable WW pickup I might consider it.

Thats because 95% of 2008 published preranks are just the same as 2007 end of the year ones with sprinkles of common sense here and there. ;-)
