Sleeper Catchers for the Second Half

Postby Super Manny » Fri Jul 11, 2008 2:19 pm

I'm not sure if anyone else finds themselves in my boat, but one of my main MOs for the second half of the season is to scrounge a reliable, productive catcher off of the FA wire. Sounds easy enough, right? ;-7

A few seasons ago, I was lucky enough to pick up a FA rookie catcher who ultimately led my team to a money league title. That catcher...? Russell Martin.

I'm hoping to catch lightning in a bottle again this year and see the potential to do so with a new crop of young, talented catchers. So, in scraping the bottom of the barrel and keeping my fingers crossed, what are your thoughts on the following guys for the second half...?

- Jeff Clement
- Chris Iannetta
- Jarrod Saltalamacchia
- Chris Snyder
- JR Towles
- Kelly Shoppach

I very seriously doubt that any of the above can match Martin's post-ASB 2006, but can any come even relatively close to making the same sort of fantasy splash? :-?

I've picked up Shoppach in one league as my starter and I've picked up Clement in another league (20 teamer) as a backup in the hopes that he'll boom like Martin. Clement will hopefully have trade value or simply block another contending team from having a valuable catcher. Or he'll perform miserably.

I think Shoppach is probably the one that is most likely to put up decent numbers and get the most PT (unless Victor comes back and catches), but one of the others will likely outperform him. It's tough to say which one though.

Me too ;-D

I've been starting Ianetta in my 12 team keeper league for almost a month now, the guy is quite productive. He doesn't play everyday, but when he does he makes it count (that that is what you want out of a WW catcher).

I'm also watch Clement, though I feel he is at least a year a way. And Towles I just can't understand. I was loving this guy coming into the season but had all my love destroyed by his pathetic attempts at hitting the ball... agh.

Torrealba will probably be traded. So Ianetta will become the #1 . He's a stud
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

I was all over Ianetta last season, looks like I was a year early.
Clement and Salty are pretty much all-in bets also. Their upside is by far better than any other scourge catcher out there.

I also don't think Johjima can continue to be as bad as he has been this season.

I would play any of those 3 first guys over anyone else you listed, plus other sure WW options like Ross, Flores...

Clement, because if he ever starts hitting decently, he can take advantage of Seattle's ineptitude and DH when he isn't catching.

What do you guys think of John Baker? How much will he start for the Marlins in the second half worth a look?

I'm keeping an eye on Jesus Flores in Washington.
