Chris Carpenter - possibilities?

Postby sdsjr3 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:51 am

Hi guys, I heard earlier this week that Carpenter was throwing and could go on rehab sometime in early August. I'm curious as to what the board thinks his prognosis is and whether he could make a successful comeback. There's been a lot of talk on here about who could be that 2nd half gem and I think if Carpenter is healthy, it could be him. I'll be curious to see what his velocity is like in his first couple rehab starts.

Hard to get too excited about him considering he had a setback just over a month ago with discomfort in his reconstructed arm. I'm rooting for him but I don't expect anything wonderful out of him this season.

Well, the latest news is very positive...

per RotoWorld:

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak suggested that Chris Carpenter (elbow) and Adam Wainwright (finger) could both return in the first half of August.
Carpenter reported no problems after a simulated game on Tuesday, and could need just one more before beginning a minor league rehab assignment. Wainwright, meanwhile, was cleared to begin throwing Monday, and could start throwing off a mound by the end of the week.

I don't think it's all that positive. Let's face it - he's got 2 hurdles. He's almost gotten around the first one in which he is simply just able to pitch pain/problem free again. The 2nd hurdle will be does he still have really good stuff. Until we've got a better idea about how fast his FB is, how well his control is, how his off speed stuff bite, it's a crapshoot.

Needless to say his return to the rotation will be better than Mark Mulder's. Can't we got back to the days where i had him and Capenter on my team and they were both winning 16-18 games a year. I probably won't pick him up since I have a pretty good sp crew right now.
