St louis closer?

Postby damnitman » Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:36 am

Anyone have any insight into the Cardinal closing situation. Will someone be officially named the closer after the break or is it best to hold onto both the rest of the way? Thanks

franklin is the closer. If Izzy keeps pitching the way he has though he may get the closing role back sometime after the all star break

This is what ESPN's Eric Karabell said in todays Relief Pitcher column:
I'm finally convinced Jason Isringhausen is not reclaiming the closer role in St. Louis anytime soon. However, Izzy remains on deck in case Ryan Franklin struggles. Just pretend Izzy is on the DL working through his problems.

I think Izzy has outpitched Franklin since Izzy came off the DL. So the way I read that is if they were going to make a switch they probably would have already done it. My own guess is that if it doesn't happen right after the break it won't as long as Franklin is getting the job done.

Just posted on Rotoworld a short time ago:
Jul. 9 - 7:47 pm et
Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said Wednesday that Jason Isringhausen could start to see more save opportunities for the Cardinals.
LaRussa said he'll play match-ups, with neither Ryan Franklin nor Isringhausen the de-facto closer. "As far as automatically holding it for Franklin or Izzy in the ninth, I don't think that's the way our club sets up right now." LaRussa said. The Cardinals website says "it's still considered a matter of time before [Isringhausen] is reinstated to his former job."

the way i see it is it is franklin's job to lose in the short term. if he begins to falter, izzy will be the first guy to get a crack at the job. long-term, however, it is chris perez' job. he has been a bit shaky this season but this is their closer of the future. he is a great strikeout pitcher who is a rookie. he certainly won't get the job this year but if he gets it all together and starts pitching like he did when he was first called up i expect him to be named closer after spring training next season.
