Borowski OUT as CLOSER!!!

Postby superjags99 » Thu Jul 03, 2008 8:36 pm

Rotowire July 3:

Borowski is expected to be relieved of his closer's role before Friday's game, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Spin: He has been allowing opposing batters to hit at a .333 clip, and at .395 in save situations. He has just six saves this season in 18 games pitched. Borowski should slide over to a middle-relief role. Manager Eric Wedge has not decided whether he will use one closer, or go with the committee approach.

Rotoworld July 3:

Joe Borowski is expected to be replaced as the Indians' closer, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Paul Hoynes didn't know whether Borowski would be replaced by a committee or whether a new closer would be named from the group of Masa Kobayashi, Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt.

We'd say Kobayashi is the favorite for saves at this point. Hoynes also reports that Rick Bauer will be designated

I grabbed the hot dog eating champion in case he gets the job. He's got horrific road numbers, but they appear to be skewed by a couple really bad road starts, including 2 vs NL teams and there aren't any more interleague games this year.

I did the same, picked up Kobayashi. Betancourt is really struggling this year, so i don't see how his numbers will get any better in a tougher role (especially since he struggled there earlier this year).

Borowski has not been a closer all season. He was just pitching in the 9th inning once in a while.

Borowski designated for assignment

CLEVELAND -- Indians closer Joe Borowski, last year's American League saves leader, was designated for assignment on Friday.

The right-hander blew his fourth save in 10 chances on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, and was 1-3 with a 7.56 ERA in 18 games this season.

Borowski had 45 saves last season but has struggled since returning from an arm injury. He returned to the Indians in late May after being sidelined for about a month with a strained right triceps that caused him to lose velocity on his pitches.

In other roster moves, the Indians called up right-handers Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum from Triple-A Buffalo.
