U.S. Freezes Solar Energy Projects

Postby Pogotheostrich » Sun Jun 29, 2008 6:08 pm

DENVER — Faced with a surge in the number of proposed solar power plants, the federal government has placed a moratorium on new solar projects on public land until it studies their environmental impact, which is expected to take about two years.

The Bureau of Land Management says an extensive environmental study is needed to determine how large solar plants might affect millions of acres it oversees in six Western states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.

But the decision to freeze new solar proposals temporarily, reached late last month, has caused widespread concern in the alternative-energy industry, as fledgling solar companies must wait to see if they can realize their hopes of harnessing power from swaths of sun-baked public land, just as the demand for viable alternative energy is accelerating.

Maybe the solar energy companies need to donate more to their campaign funds. :-P

Maybe these solar power companies should quit whining and buy private land to put their solar panels on.

It seems to me that the conspiracy is much ado about nothing. All current applications are still being processed. However, there has been an explosion in this industry due to the current social and economic environment in the U.S. This has real ramifications. It's not like sticking solar panels on top of your house. The environmental footprint of a solar plant is often larger than a coal plant or an oil rig.

Environmental activists have fought hard for these types of measures but it seems to me that the government is in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Do environmentalists only cater to ecosystems that bear cuddly life? Or is because solar is associated with green and green means good in our current culture? I don't get it. Because with the recent infusion of money into this industry the deserts of the southwest are going to undergo a dramatic change.

No one is upset that they are conducting the environmental research the problem is that they put up a 2 year roadblock for the plants.

Still reviewing applications = shuffling paper.
