I never tried the jailbreak. I don't think that there is a program out there that I want badly enough to mess with it. I still have my original iPod from eons ago and works fine even though the battery is pretty much dead (keep it plugged in my car).
I don't see what is so gimmicky at all about the device. It is an mp3/video player with a web browser. It has one of the largest screens for an ultra portable device also. Sure I wouldn't mind 1000 GB to carry all my computer files but it hasn't been a problem for me. It literally takes 3 minutes to create playlists and to check on/off albums.
