I'd have to go back and find game recaps, but I remember last year when the wheels came off that he made some comments himself, and there some comments from his manager about his head. No one's written an article about it per se, but I can connect the dots from my own history.
Thanks mak, there's a good example of angry and determined....................
One thing Snell has not lost, though, is his edginess, as was evident again yesterday ...
On his season: "There are probably 100 pitchers in the big leagues not doing well that people expected to do well. It [stinks], but it's fact. You're going to have bad years before you have great ones. Right now, I'm having a bad one. Big deal."
On having a down year right after signing that five-year, $24.6 million extension this spring: "It has nothing to do with the contract."
On why he tried to pitch through pain: "It doesn't matter if you're sore or not. I wanted to show my team that I wanted to be out there. Obviously, I didn't have it, and I was still trying to be out there."
Upon saying the latter, he raised his voice slightly.
"I never give up. I don't care if people boo me, tell me I [stink], whatever. You're not going to take my manhood from me or my competitiveness from me. Nobody will ever do that! Ever! Until the day I die? Then you take it from me."
The second bolded part made me laugh

Snell put on an animated display in the dugout that included throwing his glove, kicking repeatedly at the floor, grabbing a bat and disappearing into the tunnel. He also seemed to be getting an impassioned earful from teammate Doug Mientkiewicz.
I'd love to find out what the ____ is going on inside his head.

Looks like Snell won't be donning a Pirates uniform too much longer. What is with the Pirates and their young pitchers anyway? Seems like every pitcher just loses it.

Yeah I think they're lucky they signed him for only this much
Ian Snell rhp 3 years/$8.6M (2008-10), plus 2011, 2012 club options
* signed extension 3/16/08 * $0.6M signing bonus * 08:$0.75M, 09:$3M, 10:$4.25M, 11:$6.75M club option, 12:$9.25M club option * deal includes performance bonuses
That could have been much more expensive.
I'm finding it fascinating that someone so primed for a big/breakout year has bombed so spectacularly for what's looking like mental reasons. Well done Sluggers.

Good thing I didn't trade for him in the pre-season. Wait...
In my defense, Dunn in a bad contract for Burrell and Snell in good contracts is a deal I'd do every time on 3/1.

All accounts are that he pitched OK last night though. He was hitting 94/95 for the first time all year, he just ran up against his pitch count. He didn't even go on a rehab assignment, so he was on a low count. I for one am actually encouraged by his performance last night.

Dunn is earning every cent of that contract, sucka.
