Zumaya on schedule for return to Tigers
Eric Lacy / The Detroit News
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya remains on schedule to join his teammates this weekend in San Diego.
He was expected to throw about 25 pitches Monday night in a rehab stint with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
If Zumaya responds well, he is expected to throw up to 25 more pitches Tuesday in the Mud Hens' series against the Syracuse Chiefs.
Once Zumaya's rehab stint is completed Tuesday, he's expected to join the Tigers in a road series against the Padres that starts Friday.
It's unclear what kind of roster move will be made to accommodate a healthy Zumaya.
Zumaya pitched one inning for Toledo on Saturday, faced four batters and recorded a strikeout.
Before Monday's game, he pitched a total of six innings in the minors since June 3, surrendered four hits and two runs in five games, struck out four and walked three.
Zumaya has yet to pitch a game for the Tigers this season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery.
The Mud Hens' games Monday and Tuesday are both scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets for Tuesday's game are still available at the mudhens.com.
