Claiming a guy on the DL

Postby theplayer11 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 5:15 pm

I picked up Gonzalez from waiver wire and stashed him on my DL. I was just informed I couldn't do this because anyone could grab DL'd guys. I don't get it. If I guy is injured and an owner Dls him, he does not become a free agent. A player has to be dropped to be a free agent, or not drafted in Gonzalez's case. Is this a common rule? If an owner wanted to keep an injured player, he just has to move him to the DL...if he doesn't want him, he drops him and he becomes a free agent. What am I missing here?

Unless there is specifically something in you league's rules preventing you from doing this, I don't see why you can't. I do it all the time in leagues im in. Was it the Commish of your league, or just some guy in a yahoo league?

Yeah. Its considered bad form by some people, but unless its against your rules dont worry about it.

My one dynasty league has 10 DL spots, so to prevent people from grabbing DL FAs and stocking them up we instituted a rule that a player must take a regular roster spot for one week before being put on the DL.

Claiming players on the DL so they can help you when they get healthy is part of fantasy baseball. Tell your commish he's wrong and pick Gonzalez back up.

This doesn't pass the smell test. If whatever provider you're using allowed you to make the pickup and the DL stash, then there is no systemic prohibition built into your league settings.

How were you informed that this is not allowed? You may wish to call B.S. unless there's some additional info not provided here.

I'm one who is against picking up DL players and putting them of your DL. I feel that the DL is for players who were on your team and then got hurt. However unless your league's rules prohibit this action I feel that you are allowed to do it. Maybe your league should put it up for a vote as to whether they want that rule or not?

I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't be able to add a player if he wishes. It just sounds like lazy sour grape owners who don't take the time to figure out when a player will be back. They want to find the easy way to get the players without waiting for it. It's fantasy baseball when people start complaining about injured players being picked up they should find something else to do with there free time.

This reasoning makes very little sense. I don't know about your leagues, but in mine, I am not at liberty to simply add a player to my DL. I have to have a legal roster, then I have to drop a player in my active roster, then I can stash the newly added DL player if I need to. Sure this gives me the option of adding 2 for the price of 1, or something like that, but what else would I do?

Suppose I wanted to add Mike Gonzalez. In your estimation I suppose the only way I should be allowed to add him is if I am willing to carry him on my active roster without DLing him? By that logic, the offense doesn't even occur until after I've added him. Trying to police a situation like this simply does not work and is not a viable way to conduct a fantasy league.

I guess the real issue is that no matter what happens, you should be able to add the player to your active roster. The only thing the commish should even be able to prevent is you adding a player to the DL who wasn't on your roster before he was placed on the DL. Go try to police that and see how it works.

This is just a very, very silly prohibition.

That is lame. Unless your league has a specific rule in place that prohibits this, then you should be able to do it. I've done it many times. It can be useful when you have to activate another player and you don't want to drop anyone. You can pick up the DL'ed guy and then swap him with the guy currently on your DL. It's called managing your roster.

This is 100% fine if your league software lets you do it, unless there is a specific rule mentioned by the commish before the season started. I don't get why people think this is tacky- you still have to drop an active player to add a DL guy on any major website. I see it as no different than guys who pickup NA players from the FA pool weeks or months before they are called up and stash them on the bench.
