Zumaya bringin' the Hot Sauce

Postby OnceinDC2\1 » Wed Jun 04, 2008 2:04 pm

"Jun 4 RHP Joel Zumaya topped out at 101 mph while pitching two innings of relief for Class A Lakeland on Tuesday night. He threw 18 of 24 pitches for strikes and was consistently in the high 90s with his fastball. He will make several more appearances for Lakeland before being bumped up to Class AAA Toledo. Zumaya is ahead of schedule after having surgery last fall to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. He was only scheduled to go one inning, but his pitch count was so low he was sent out for a second inning of work."

This is very encouraging. There were rumblings that he would be no where near his old velocity.

any chance this animal takes the closer's role with brute force? In one of my H2H leagues, I'm thin on closers, and need to stay one step ahead come playoff time. Ive been able to piece together Soria, Torres, Wheeler, and Soriano. Not the best, but with a killer O and set of SP's, it works.

So, too early to think like this, or not even gonna happen?

Not this year. Leyland is sticking with Jones as the closer. Leyland wouldnt even give Zumaya the job when he was fully healthy, so he's definitely not giving him the job when he's coming back from an injury.

Probably not, Detroit hasn't been getting enough save opps for Jones to blow up

I appreciate the help here. Surprisingly, this is the only team I need closer help on, if I even need it right now. I ended up with only Soria after the draft because too many players fell into my lap. I'm in first in this league, but am looking for any WW saves' guys to help come playoffs.

I can't say whether he comes back to be the closer (everyone else says no...so they're prob right). HOWEVER. The guy's on the DL...providing he isn't going to cause a logjam on your squad I say stash him in your DL until you see what he does and where he goes.

That would be nice, but since I'm willing to bet 90% of the people on here already have someone stashed on their DL, there just won't be any room.
I was mainly wondering if the leash on Jones shortened any. Zumaya is filthy!

just an FYI, the radar gun in Lakeland is notorius for being a little high (Zumaya's been clocked at 106 before, Jason Grilli was throwing 98 in spring training on it)...not sure if those 100 MPH numbers came from there or a scouts gun, but there's a possibility it's a little inflated.

Could very well be inflated numbers but even if it is by 5 or 6 MPH, he should be pretty nasty sitting in the mid 90s.
