Melvin Mora or Junior Spivey

Postby wormburners » Thu May 16, 2002 10:31 pm

I'm currently 2nd in a league with 10 teams. Fantasy points are based on

Batting (Currently 5th in BA Avg, 1st in HR, 2nd in RBI's, 5th in SB)
My Batting Lineup Includes:

Marrero, Eli STL C
Gil, Geronimo BAL C
Bagwell, Jeff HOU 1B
Mora, Melvin BAL 2B
Chavez, Eric OAK 3B
Rodriguez, Alex TEX SS
Kearns, Austin CIN OF
Anderson, Garret ANA OF
Henderson, Rickey BOS OF
Guerrero, Vladimir MON OF
Bautista, Danny ARI OF
Guillen, Carlos SEA Utility
Hinske, Eric TOR Utility

IR:
Pudge
David Justice

Pitching (Currently 7th in ERA, 4th in K's. 5th in Saves, 4th in Wins)

Glavine, Tom ATL P
Wells, David NYY P
Julio, Jorge BAL P
Irabu, Hideki TEX P
Johnson, Randy ARI P
Prior, Mark CHC P
Wickman, Bob CLE P
Perez, Odalis LA P
Padilla, Vicente PHI P

My questions are:

Junior Spivey is available as a FA, should I pick him up?
Any trades I should consider, Glavine possibly?
Josh Fogg is avialable as a FA, which SP should I drop?
Eric Milton is available as a FA, which SP should I drop?

Thanks

Mora and Spivey are pretty equal now right down to the fact that neither has been getting enough sb's recently. Go with Spivey if you want the better player, Mora if you're worried about all those guys returning to action in Arizona cutting in on Spivey's playing time.

I'd consider all sorts of trades - if you can upgrade Glavine or turn him into another solid bat, grabbing Fogg afterwards, that might be a good move. Only do this if you get a very good deal for Glavine, however.

I'd be pretty worried about Pudge at this point. If you can deal him to someone who's willing to take a chance on him and/or deal for a better catcher, I'd do this. 2B could also use an upgrade.

Others I'd shop and see if any interesting offers are forthcoming would be Hinske, Guillen or Padilla. You may not get any interesting nibbles, but it's worth a shot.

I don't hink I'd drop any of your pitchers outright for Fogg, but I'd love to make a deal and put myself in position to grab him with a free roster spot. Milton, on the other hand, probably isn't worth it.

On the whole, I'd say you're in great shape. Both your era and avg should be on the rise. A bit more speed wouldn't hurt, and Henderson will have to be replaced at some point. The catching situation is also a little worrisome, but those are all relatively minor quibbles. A little tweaking here and there, and you'll be in the hunt.

Actual Trades

Could you suggest actuall trades based on my team?

Would Glavine and Mora for Soriano be a good trade?

What about Glavine and Mora for Boone and Abreu?

Any other suggestions?

Sure. Soriano would normally be too little return for Glavine and Mora, but if the trade winds up in effect giving you Soriano and Fogg, I like it. Targeting Abreu while he's (relatively) cold also sounds like a great idea. Same goes for Hudson.

Padilla plus Marrero for a catcher upgrade (Kendall?) might also make sense. With Fogg available, you can be pretty flexible.

Offering Hinske for the injured Nevin could also be the centerpiece of a deal. And listening to offers for Prior can't hurt either. I think he'll be great, but if you can get a proven stud for an unproven rookie, you might wind up ahead.

Glavine, Mora for Shawn Green and Soriano?

Postby wormburners » Fri May 17, 2002 1:44 pm

Do you think this is a fair trade or do I need to add another player?

Which one? Glavine and Mora for Soriano is more than fair (not including Fogg), Glavine/Mora for Boone/Abreu favors you but might be worth considering for the other owner if he is desperate for pitching.

Do I really want to give up Glavine?

Postby Guest » Fri May 17, 2002 3:15 pm

If I give up Glavine, I probably can pick up Fogg to replace him. But do I really want to do that or stay put for awhile?

From my lineup, can you see any trades involving one of my power hitters and a pitcher for Abreua and Boone?

You could try Padilla plus Mora for Soriano.

For Abreu and/or Boone, you might try dangling Pudge and seeing what reaction you get?
