Changing # of Keepers midway through league?

My league is a standard h2h keeper where we keep 5 players.

Some of us think 5 isn't enough and we should keep more. (I agree).

But, some of us think that we should make next year's draft keep 8-9 players, which I disagree with because everyone drafted THIS YEAR with the intent of keeping 5 players. If we increase the keeper slots, I think we should wait until at least the 2010 draft, but keep 5 in 2009 as promised at the start of 2008.


Fellow cafe-ers, am I wrong to think this?

I'd like to hear some fantasy veteran's advice to weigh this decision....

If I understand you correctly, you're asking should you keep 8 players this offseason or 8 players in the 2009 offseason? As in right before the 2009 draft, you keep 8 players, or right before the 2010 draft you keep 8 players.

I definitely think you need to wait until BEFORE the 2010 draft to keep 8 players. If you were thinking AFTER 2010 draft, then that is far too long. You don't want to impact trades or draft choices that were made this year, but going into next year's draft, I see no drawback to telling people they need to plan to keep 8.

BTW, why are you making this choice? Have you considered the impacts? Keep in mind that the more keepers, the more stagnant the standings become and the more difficult it is for a team in last place to make up ground. Sometimes adding too many keepers destroys a league because the non competitive teams lose interest. I'm not telling you it's a bad choice, but I'm just suggesting you make sure it's the right choice. Plenty of successful leagues out there keep 15 players, but it takes a special group.

Then you are right. And I don't think it's fair to even vote on this. If one person is against doing it before 2009 draft, then that's how it should stand because otherwise it's changing the rules midstream. That said, if I was the only guy I'd probably give in just so it wasn't a big deal. Choose your battles and all. But if 25% of the league wants to wait, that should be enough to keep it until 2010

This is the type of thing that I would just put up for league vote. If the entire league is open to making the switch and adding keepers, then there is no reason to wait until after next season.

I understand your dilemma, but if you can get a full league consensus, then nobody is going to feel harmed. If there is dissent, then you wait.

I'm assuming he asked because there is a disagreement. I took a league (football) from 3 to 6 a couple years back. We added one player for three years, that way no one could complain that we only did it cause XYZ was deeper then him, and people could plan for it better.
