Exactly 100 years ago they weren't even on the map. Even after Ray Chapman died they weren't implemented. The ear guard was implemented after Tony Conigliaro's career was ruined. the face mask may become implemented until the tragic death of a star pitcher.

Lidge has been the best closer in baseball this season, I wouldn't call him ruined

Maybe he could wear one of those plastic face mask like they do in the NBA.

Then you'd have to worry about shattered pieces of plastic being embedded into your face on top of all the broken bones. I really don't think those plastic masks would do anything but hurt you more if a baseball gets belted into your dome.

I think that even if the Padres are out of it this season and Young is able to pitch they may let him simply to get his confidence back. After all, immediately after it happened , Young wanted to continue pitching in the game. I took a chance and picked him up in my 14 team league and dropped Homer Bailey for him. I figured with the way Bailey had been pitching, it would probably be about the same time Young would come back that I would have the confidence in Bailey. I wish Young the best because his life is more important than baseball or fantasy. But I really think if he wants to pitch he will again this year.
