That is the controversy that takes shape each season as we always try to find the next big thing. Right now Carlos Gonzales is on waivers and will probably be picked up by a ton of players. I however am not really too exited about him. He no longer steals bases and his pop is about average. Do you agree or disagree?
In our league Bruce is taken, Rasmus is taken, Kershaw is gone, even Chase Headley is owned (by me) and so the player who I feel is the next best bet to be called up this year is David Price. Baseball America ranked him as the 10 best prospect out there.
The guy has a great, great arm. However, will he even be called up this year? The Ray's pitching staff seems to be doing fine without him.
How about Fowler? How about Matt Wieters? Andrew McCuthen will steal you bases but, don't you want a bat that can both steal and rake? Don't you want pitchers that can get a high K rate as well as own a low era?
So who is your choice if you had the 1st waiver pick in your keeper league?
McCutcheon is good. If someone gets hurt in Milwaukee LaPorta's bat (or Gamel's) will play. Price won't get more than a cup of coffee this year, and probably won't play much next year either. Though I think all of the guys mentioned here are more worth it than Gonzalez.
Jason Heyward is someone who could see time at the end of the year, and take over in Left for the braves as soon as next year.
Yes, I am aware of all those guys. We could go down the list and mention Travis Snyder (not due up til 2009), Matt Wieters, Jason Haywood also not expected to be called up till late 2009 but, who would be the best, who would be worth waiting for. I still believe Price would be worth waiting for. LaPorta does not have a position as far as I can tell right now but, he is also someone to watch, I agree.
Okay, so the Pittsburgh prospect seems to be a favorite here so far. Do you guys like him for his stolen bases or do you think he might be able to crack 20 Home Runs as a ceiling? If I compared him to Bruce and Bruce gets a 10, then Andrew McCutchen would earn a 5, maybe a 6 for his stolen bases. Better then Jacoby Ellsbury? That I am not so sure about.
