Bronson Arroyo minus two disasters is pretty darn good!

In my ultra-competitive 13-team Yahoo Plus league I am looking to add a decent starter who ks guys. At this point in the season the pickings are slim and all attempts at trading for a stud have yielded nothing. So, off to the wire...


There sits Bronson with a ghastly ERA of 5.29 and hideous WHIP at 1.61

But I looked at his log and saw two horrid performances and a bad day early. I only took out the two horrid games where he gave up 8 runs in 3.2 innings (Game 5 home v. Houston) and 7 runs in 1.1 innings (Game 7 @ Atlanta).

The result?

Bronson Arroyo has an ERA of 3.47 and a WHIP at 1.39. These numbers include that 5 runs in 5.2 innings game in Game #2.


I think he's worth a look, guys, if you need someone just below stud.

The thing is, that can be said about a lot of people. If you take out their worst 2 outings, a ton of pitchers can have numbers like that.

Did Dave Wannstead (sp?) start this thread? When he was the Bears coach, he used to always say "well, if it wasn't for that 95 yard kickoff return and that 55 yard TD run, we would've been in the game"...WTF?

I see the point that your trying to make, but the difference between solid pitchers and pitchers like Arroyo is that the solid pitchers bad games are fewer and farther between and when they have a bad game, they're not as bad as a fringe pitchers bad game, so buyer beware.

Bronson Arroyo has a BABIP of .366 so far this year. And thats right behind andrew miller as far as all starting pitchers in MLB. Translation he is getting really unlucky, actually he is the second most unlucky pitcher in baseball.


8.5 K/9 and K/bb of 2.35. You'd be wise to pick him up, he should be nasty soon and he's got Jay Bruce to help him win more games.
