Corpas and Fuentes heading into 2009

Postby Sticky Spice » Thu May 29, 2008 2:54 pm

Unfortunately my keeper league team stinks and I'm already having to rebuild.

Looking ahead it appears that Fuentes is a free agent at the end of the season. I'm guessing the Rocks will want Corpas closing by 2009 if not back in the role earlier?

Also, if the Rockies keep sucking, is there a chance Fuentes gets moved midseason? Judging by his numbers he'll be a closer somewhere in 2009 as well.

Any opinions on this situation?

That's how it looks to me too. Of course that's without any inside info or following the team on a daily basis or anything.

i think fuentes gets traded to a contender after the ASB although IF the rox keep him at closer all year that would likely make him a type A free agent and worth a coupla good draft picks...could be a bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush scenario for the rockies..but the likely route will be trade him and move corpas back to closer since they did give him a multi year contract this spring..IMO corpas is the better risk as a possible 09 closer

if the Rockies are out of it Fuentes definitely gets shipped off. Also if Corpas continues to falter they have Juan Morillo whose being groomed to be a closer and does have closer stuff. Taylor Buchholz has also looked really good so far this season and could probably be a solid temporary closer.

Fuentes is DEFINITELY getting traded this year. Pretty much all the Roxs announcers/TV Men / Radio men say so.

Didn't they take Casey Weathers first round last year?

Good calls on Juan Morillo and Casey Weathers - I had never heard of them before. Looks like even if Fuentes, Buchholz, and Speier are not candidates to close in 2009 that even then Corpas is no shoo-in.

Speier was a closer in the minors
Corpas has been looking decent lately
Buchholz has been very good but had a bad outing yesterday mainfested mainly by a bad throw to first and a bad job holding onto the ball by helton

Morillo and Weathers I still think are a year or so out.

I see almost no way that Fuentes is with the team next year. As others have mentioned, he will likely be moved at the deadline (hopefully for a king's ransom; teams will be desperate for "proven" closers).

Casey Weathers is seemingly on the fast track to the majors - I'd expect a September call up this year, and potentially closing next year depending on the Corpas situation. Buchholz is also intriguing; he has great stuff and has really embraced his late inning role in the pen after being a starter for the majority of his career. I look at Morillo as a non-factor... his control is awful.

Morillo K's a batter an inning I think. But he walks like 4.5 per 9
