This is where the guy has hit his whole career. He is struggling a bit so why not have him in front of Mags to make sure he gets good pitches to hit to try & bust him out of it. Instead he keeps a really really struggling Sheffield or a guy like Thames in the 3 hole over Miggy...come on.
I realize Thames is going off tonight, but that is irrelevant.
I think its a crime they wont put him in the 3 hole.
The Tigers offense has been wildly inconsistent. And let's face it .... despite what Thames is doing tonight .... he isn't a better hitter than Cabrera and honestly should not be hitting in the 3 - hole over M - Cab. I don't know, it looks Leyland is just too damn stubborn and is going to leave Cabrera in that 5 - spot.
Another agreement here...He's one of the best overall hitters in baseball, let alone in the American League, let alone THE best on his team. I understand he is young, he is the new guy, but that is a load of crap. Bat this guy 3rd and maybe he will hit closer to hit career average (which is .310) instead of .275.
Leyland always seemed kinda like a smart guy, but come on there is only so much a baseball community can take. Putting MCab in the 3 hole cant hurt right now...
I was surprised when they started the season with Cabrera batting 5th and not 3rd. It got to a new low a couple nights ago, when Leyland batted Joyce (240 hitter) in the second spot and Polonco in the third spot in the order. Now that is just plain dumb.
I compare it to when I coached a bunch of six year olds. The first couple games, I just decided to bat everyone alphabetically based on their last name. After not scoring any runs for a couple games, because the good hitters were so spread out in the lineup that my team couldn't string together enough hits to score runs, I decided to group all the good hitters together. Ended up scoring some runs because the team could string together some hits rather then the hit, out, out, hit, out. Now batting a .240 hitter in the #2 hole makes ZERO sense, if it can at all be avoid. And sure enough, the Tigers have the proto-type #2 hitter in Polonco already on the team. Someone please try to explain that move to me.
It is becomeing more and more apparent that Leyland is just a flat out bad manager. I really am starting to understand why the Pirates of the early/mid 80's couldn't win a World Series title with some very, very good talent on the rosters.
