What's the story on this? And is anyone else as excited as me if this actually happens to go through and he gets 3B/SS eligibility?? The Rays could send (Ben) Zobrist back to Durham and lean on Evan Longoria to spell Bartlett when needed. Longoria played shortstop full-time in 2004 at Rio Hondo Junior College and got about 20 starts there the following season at Long Beach State while starter Troy Tulowitzki was injured.
On Tuesday, Longoria said the Rays haven't asked him about playing shortstop in a pinch, but he said he thinks he could handle the job.
"It's obviously a different position, a little bit different role to fill," he said, "but with some work I don't think that I would have that much trouble adjusting to that position."

I've just been reading around and came across this on the Yahoo fantasy sports homepage. It'd be really nice to get SS eligibility out of him for people who might have him in deep mixed leagues; he'd be a nice commodity to have.
Bad idea for the team, why mess up a good thing, Bartlett has been playing good D, and Longorias D at 3B is Superb. I cant believe the team values will Willy Aybar this much to consider this a logical move.
Its not like hed be taking over the starting SS job. Just playing there on Bartletts day off. So I'd assume if this even happens, w/o an injury at SS, it would take Longoria a month or more to pickup SS in most leagues.
I dont get the impression from what i've read, that the Rays value Aybar so much that they'd take longoria or bartlett out to get him in. But rather that giving the SS the day off is easier to do with Longoria and Aybar in on defense, without losing anything offensively.
May 31 3B Evan Longoria started taking ground balls at shortstop during batting practice Friday. With Ben Zobrist optioned back to Triple-A, Longoria, who played shortstop in junior college and for about 20 games at Long Beach State, will serve as Jason Bartlett's backup, though likely only on an emergency basis.
