Eric Byrnes 15-day DL

Postby BostonBK7 » Tue May 27, 2008 6:52 pm

From rotowire:

Update: Byrnes (hamstrings) was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday, the East Valley Tribune reports

Recommendation: In an effort to get him healthy, the D-Backs have decided it’s better to shut Byrnes down completely for a couple of weeks since he’s been ineffective at the plate and on the basepaths. “He tried to play through it,” D-Backs general manager Josh Byrnes said. “To get him back to 100 percent, he needs to heal.” Arizona recalled Alex Romero from Triple-A to replace Byrnes on the active roster, while Jeff Salazar, Romero and Chris Burke could all see time in left in the coming weeks.

Great. Is he droppable at this point?

This actually seems like a good thing to me. He needs to rest those hammies b/c he is sucking badly right now.

Byrnes targeting a June 23 return:

OF Eric Byrnes (hamstrings) is targeted to return Monday for the opener of the D-backs' three-game series in Boston, manager Bob Melvin said. Byrnes, who has been on the disabled list since May 27, is expected to start his rehab assignment for either Class AAA Tucson, which begins a home series Friday, or Class A Visalia, which plays a three-game series at San Jose beginning Thursday.

How do you guys see Byrnes doing the rest of the year now that his hammys are hopefully healed? Most of his value lies in his power/speed combo, so, if he's not stealing bases...

Well, if he's healthy you've got to like his chances. Arizona needs a shot in the arm and I think Byrnes will start posting solid numbers again. The buy low window on him is closing.

He was average at best the whole season, not just the few weeks preceding his DL stint. He's sitting in the FA pool and it looks like he'll be in there for a nice long swim, as far as I'm concerned.

From what I understand, the hamstring issue has been a problem all year. If that is cleared up, there is a strong chance that he'll be playing more like he did last year. I wouldn't expect a .300 BA, but I could see him stealing 25-30 bases from here on out, and tossing in 15-20 HR.

Yeah, he did something in Spring training - I think racing Chris Young or something like that. To say that he'll be average is a little foolish and to not gamble on him when he's in the FA pool is probably a really big mistake. I agree with ROC somewhat on the numbers we'll see but I think they are a little high considering he'll only have half a the season remaining once he's back.

I'm sorry, but I just don't put that much stock in players that have career years at age 31. 2007 was a career high in AVG, and he has neither topped 17 steals or 21 HR in more than one year previously. Add that to a questionable pair of hammies and you have a recipe for disinterest.
