Freefalling Justin Upton

Postby nsulham » Mon May 26, 2008 8:49 am

So we all knew young Mr. Upton couldn't keep up the torrid pace he began the season with but did anyone see this dramatic drop coming? He's hitless in his last 20 AB's, hasn't hit a home run in seems like forever and his average has plummeted in the last few weeks.

Again, I knew not to expect him to continue doing what he was doing the first couple weeks of the season but anyone have any idea what's going on with him? Is he chasing bad balls, getting into bad habits again, trying to do too much, pitchers working him differently? What's the deal here?

I'd be more concerned about this slump if he wasn't still hitting high in the order and drawing nearly one walk every game and not by virtue of batting before the pitcher.

I have Upton on my team as well. It is obvious that pitchers have found a hole in his swing. Yeah he's still walking but he is also striking out alot. Now he needs to adjust.

He is 20 yrs old so Im expecting highs and lows.

Upton is happily enduring this slump from my bench. I never expected to have him contribute to my team this early anyway. He'll work through this. Wacky stats this past week. 23% walk rate, which is phenomenal. 30% contact rate, which is absolutely horrid. Zero hits.

We all know how B.J. Upton was when he was first in the mayjor's he couldn't find a spot in the field which was effecting his playing time. Now look at B.J. he has found a home in center and has become one of the best hitters in all of baseball. My point is Justin will be the same we all know he can do it from his first few games he just has to get comfortable.

The whole team is struggling the first time through a pitcher for some reason. Upton is in a slump, but he is too talented not to find his way back. My biggest beef is arizona not letting him steal this year.

It seems to me Upton is doing everything but hit flyballs or extra basehits regularly (striking out, walking, hitting grounders, hitting singles). I think he'll be fine, but I'm not sweating it given that's he up to the 5th spot in the Arizona order and he's slumping on my team's bench.

Regressing to the mean, this was to be expected. If you take a snapshot of the top 100 players right now I bet at least 20 of them are not in the top 100 at the end of the year. Baseball is very very streaky.
