Hi all...at what point do you punt a category? Right now I am pretty much dead in saves and I have tried to trade for a closer, but the teams in my league really over values them. Right now I have 3 out of 12 points in the category in my league and I am 17 saves behind the next team. Should I trade my only closer and try to improve another category or trade some players and try to acquire another closer?
I wouldn't advise it. Punting a category really leaves little room for error.
Saves in particular are a volatile commodity - and this year is no different. Stay attentive and keep an eye on the closers thread in this forum. 17 might seem like a big number now - but 1 additional closer could get you 17 saves by years end.
Best not to punt any category if at all possible, however it did work for me last year.
In last years draft, again in closer (saves) category, I had drafted B.J. Ryan along with two others (don't remember who). As all know, Ryan was lost for the season very early on, and I started to fall behind quickly in saves. One of my other two closers (Guardardo I believe) tanked very quickly also. As in your case, there were no other closers to be had.
About this time last year, I decided to go all SP for the rest of the year, at least until towards the end of the season. I quickly forged to the lead in K's and Wins, and stayed in upper half in ERA and WHIP. Picking up Lincecum when he was promoted helped. Then with about a month to go, I saw where I was only about 5 saves from 11th place, so I traded a SP for a closer, and finished 11th in saves.
As it turned out, I won my league by 1 point.
True story.
But, still best not to punt if at all possible.

12 team MLB, there must be some closers on the wire. Why do you have all of those middle relievers if you league doesn't have holds? Seems like you can replace some of those MRs with closers for free instead of trading for them.
Plus, you have Perez. I expect he'll be the St. Louis closer sooner or later this year.

Have youy ever played 12 team? It seems you think it's like 8 teams where yyou can get anything on the wire. In a 12 team league, there are no closers, and you're lucky if there are any good middle relievers left.
I decided a week or two ago, to go ahead and punt saves in my 15 teamer. I only had one closer, and couldn't get anybody to bite on some trades, so I dealt Hoffman for a SS upgrade. If nobody is biting on trading a closer, I would definitely start offering some trades with Capps in the deal to try and get some power at your 1B position.
If you currently have a 3 there's no way you should punt saves. You don't need to win the catagory, but it would sure help to get a couple more points.

There are almost always closers on the wire in a 12 team league. Maybe just not ones anyone wants. Or they just may not have been named closer yet. Borowski out there? Heath Bell? Salomon Torres? Taylor Buchholz?

Of those guys, only Borowski is a full time closer, and I have yet to see a single league, even 8 teams, without him being drafted.
I don't know what kind of 12 team leagues you guys play in, but there are NO closers on the WW in the 12 teamers I play in. In fact, almost all the "closer backups" are rostered as well. This will be the case in any competitive league.
