Thoughts on Jose Cruz...

Postby fvilla18 » Mon Mar 03, 2003 4:38 am

What are your thoughts on Jose Cruz? He was always looked at as the next superstar. now that he is on the giants, will he improve and play like he's capable???

He could be a good sleeper pick this year. :-o

I also believe he could be undervalued at many fantasy drafts this year. I don't see any jump in HR, but I would expect that his all-around numbers be improved. Fresh start should be nice.

Boy that Giants team could be even better than they were last year. If Durham and Alfonzo come through that would take a lot of pressure off Cruz

From what I've read, the Giants lineup will look like this:
Durham
Cruz
Aurelia
Bonds
Alfonzo

I think that everyone of those five should see plenty of good pitches to hit. And I think that it would be hard for Cruz to hit less than his 18 home runs last year hitting there (I mean in front of Bonds. Of course Pac Bell is going to hurt him. But anyone in front of Bonds is almost guaranteed a lot of fastballs.
Consider: Three years ago he hit 31 home runs. Two years ago, he hit 34. Last year the numbers fell to 18. I'd predict his numbers climb back up into the low thirties, though the steals should fall. Who is going to be stealing with Bonds to drive them in?

Cruz should have a decent year, I picked him as my 4th outfielder in the 16th round of my 12 team mixed 5x5. I think he is worth the risk that late in the draft.

Driving in those Runs

Postby Ballwreckers » Mon Mar 03, 2003 7:36 pm

Obviously, if Cruz is in the 2nd spot, then the Giants are looking for his speed if Durham fails to get on base and his ability to drive him home or anyone else that is on base. I think Cruz will hit 25 HR's and have at least 20sb. Basically, he should do well is most catagories hitting in front of Barry! Hell, to a pitcher, anyone who hits in front of or behind Barry is almost the equilavant of pitching at Coors..well, almost. As a pitcher, I hate either situation.

Cruz is actually slated to bat either before or after Bonds. Alfonzo will be the other batter to sandwich him. Last I read, he will be in the 3rd spot, which means he could see some of the pitches that made Kent the hitter he is today. Look for him to have a really good year. Batting next to a superstar tends to boost your stats.
