Wolf vs. Webb

Postby John Bonzo » Fri Feb 27, 2004 12:23 pm

I am torn on which pitcher to take in a 5x5 Roto. it is a keeper league, but it is unlikely that either will be kept so thats doesnt matter. Webb seems to be a higher risk, higher reward kind of player, and Wolf has a good bullpen and lineup behind him now. I dont like Wolf's ERA and WHIP numbers from a year ago at all. Any suggestions on who to take?

Wolf

I don't know how well Webb is going to do going up against the #2 starter...

Webb is the real deal...while I agree his win total could suffer a little being the #2 guy in Arizona, his other numbers should be excellent...he is a great young pitcher with huge upside...Wolf should be solid but not spectacular...like you said in your original post...Webb has a much higher reward facor... ;-D

Did you see Webb's era last year. Doesnt matter who he's up against. Take Webb.
Let's play two.

I like Webb. Randy Wolf had a habit of sucking the first half, then being lights out the second half. Last year was reversed which makes me question his sudden meltdown. Was he pitching thru injury? Webb has much more upside.

Why does everybody make a big deal out of him being #2? He was #1 for a good chunk of last year I believe, and if not, he should have been. After the first couple times through the rotation it doesn't make any difference because #1's don't always line up against #1's. And he's only a #2.......... this should not be a major factor for determining value I don't think. If anything, he's guaranteed to get more starts than guys lower in the rotation.

Last year Webb had a better WHIP, ERA, BAA, and K/9. There's 3 of the 4 SP cats Webb will likely be better in. He could also have close to as many wins as Wolf. Sexson will only help increase the wins. Easy choice for me, I take Webb.

Webb is the real deal and a much better pick than Wolf

As for the #2 starter "issue", that is a silly argument to make. With all of the injury problems and shifting of rotations that occur with pitchers these days it's ridiculous to make their position in the rotation a deciding factor in evaluating a players prospective season. Even if this were a factor, Webb doesn't give up many runs and with Sexson in AZ and Hillenbrand healthy they should have a more effective offense than last year.

There's no reason to conclude than Wolf's ERA and Whip # are suddenly going to drastically improve.

If you could get em at the same spot in your draft i'd probably take Webb, but truth is you can get wolf much later in most drafts. I'd use the earlier pick on a bat or closer myself and get Wolf later.

Here's the industry's guesstimate on the two (updated average projections of 10 sources):

Webb: 14-9/ 191 IP/ 177 K/ 3.54 ERA/ 1.25 WHIP
Wolf: 15-10/ 205 IP/ 177 K/ 4.01 ERA/ 1.27 WHIP
