This has been a problem in our leagues recently. Pitching seems to have become irrelevant. We use H HR RBI BB SB R for hitting and IP W ER S K for pitching. However, we did not use a pitching limit so it was easy to exploit this by just picking up random 2 start pitchers every week and conceding a few stats while just stacking the hitting lineup by trading all the good pitchers for more hitters. Most of us in the league feel this is making pitching irrelevant since it no longer matters how good your pitchers are, just how many starts you can get. We want to find a way to limit this so as a temporary solution this year, we put in a start limit for each week at 9 (we can start 6 P totale btw). Does anyone know any other way we could make pitching a little more important in our league? Maybe substituting another stat for the ones we use?

You have more hitting categories than pitching categories and all of your pitching categories are counting stats. The only negative one is earned runs. If you have nothing but counting stats what do you expect to happen?

First, make the same amount of cats. SPs are already less than hitters because they don't get saves, so they're down one already. Put WHIP and ERA back in there, so bad pitchers hurt you in two cats. Get rid of ER to compensate.

Cap the number of starts if you still want to have IP as a stat. If you have 7 pitching spots, cap the number of starts per week at 14.

On offensive side same issue. Why all the counting stats? Why have hits instead of BA? Guys at the top of the lineup have a huge advantage just because of more opportunities. They have that already, but by replacing BA with H you make it even worse.

those are some good ideas. to answer your question of why so many counting stats, when we all first started playing together 6 or so years ago, these were the stats we used, and our league is pretty opposed to change. but after the last 2 years, we see some changes need to be made.

Some people use net wins for pitchers also. Instead of W, you use (W-L). Real disincentive to pickup crappy pitchers.

what about using QS instead of W. That would be more beneficial for the better pitchers would it not?

It still wouldn't discourage streaming, which Net Wins does.

When someone is faced with a prospect of moving backwards in a category, they get more choosy.

standard 5X5 works teh best...thats why its the standard. i suggest going with those 10 first, then if you want to add cats, but make sure they get offset

I'm surprised it took this long for streaming to become an issue. However, I think you need to finish the year with the the stats you started with unless ALL the managers agree to change. I mean you have been playing these cats for 6 years. IF EVERYONE agrees to change I agree with 03 and just use the standard 5X5 cats as there is a reason they are the standard league setup

standard 5X5 works teh best...thats why its the standard.

it's standard because it was easy to compute off of newspaper box scores (at least 4x4 of the 5x5).

there are much better systems than the standard.
