Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams might begin the season on the disabled list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on Thursday.
Williams, who has made 11 straight opening-day starts for New York, hit .263 with 15 homers and 64 RBI last season. He is a career .305 hitter with 241 home runs and 1,062 RBI in 13 seasons in the Bronx.
Williams signed a seven-year contract with a club option for an eighth year on November 25, 1998. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on September 13, 1985.
