Yankees' Williams might begin season on DL

Postby WebHamster » Fri Feb 27, 2004 3:00 am

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams might begin the season on the disabled list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on Thursday.

Williams, who has made 11 straight opening-day starts for New York, hit .263 with 15 homers and 64 RBI last season. He is a career .305 hitter with 241 home runs and 1,062 RBI in 13 seasons in the Bronx.

Williams signed a seven-year contract with a club option for an eighth year on November 25, 1998. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on September 13, 1985.

My doctor told me not to participate in any kind of activity for a month after my appendectomy. So, it's understandable that he didn't start opening day.

Well, he's not playing that well, but I'll assume that it's more about his advancing age than this surgery.
