Would you rather your pitcher face frank thomas or randy johnson as the 9th hitter in the opposing lineup? One small advantage for SPs in the AL is that managers b/c they dont bat are more likely to pitch later in games.

However, i prefer johan though i think both are very good.

I think he is saying that they are very close and that because Webb plays in the NL he would rank Webb over Santana.


I think Santana is the better pitcher, Webb isn't too bad but I'd rather have Santana.

Santana's 2003 stats as a starter:

18 GS - 110.1 IP
11 W - 2 L
2.85 ERA - 0.996 WHIP
27 BB - 109 K

That would be 110 H+BB allowed to go along with 109 stirkeouts. And fewer H+BB than innings pitched.

Despite being in the AL he had a better ERA as a starer (Webb had a 2.86 ERA as a starter last season). Johan's WHIP was better than Webb's 1.15, he had a better K/9 ratio, and a better K/BB ratio.

How is Webb a better pick under any circumstances? Webb was also a rookie last season, and Santana has been in the bigs since 2000, and has been stellar the past two seasons. The reason for that is Santana developed his best pitch before the 2001 campaign, a change-up he throws from two different grips to get two different kinds of break, that he uses to complement his mid-nities fastball (not bad for a lefty) and slider.

They're both really good pitchers. I'd go with Santana, but I think it'll be easier to land Webb.
