I know WHIP stands for Walks + Hits / Innings Pitched, but I always assumed that hitting a batter counted as well. I just figured that WHIP was a better acronym than WHHBPIP.

a HBP does not count in WHIP.

This is why I've always thought that OBP would be a better stat to use than WHIP. Obviously if you're hitting players you're not pitching very well. Besides, in leagues that count OBP for hitters it just looks nicer.
