Garrett Atkins an Indian? (pure speculation)

Down the road, one possible move that might make some sense (and to be clear, this is pure speculation): If Colorado eventually turns the page on 2008, the Indians and the Rockies could match up well in a deal built around Garrett Atkins. The Rockies have a third baseman waiting in the wings, in Ian Stewart -- although he is not faring well so far -- and the Indians, as they look for ways to improve their offense, are flexible at first and third base.

If any of you guys are Indians fans, Bruce Drennan (dude is an idiot yet I end up listening to him out of boredom on gamedays) is yacking about Buster Olney talking about this rumored possibility of a trade, and the only thing I can see that Olney has said, is that at some point down the line, if the Rox are out of contention, they could move Atkins. None of this is news to me at all. It's been said before, the fact that they haven't renewed his contract or negotiated toward an extension, and they have Ian Stewart sitting in AAA.

Yet somewhere Drennan is getting that Olney says Josh Barfield and Aaron Laffey for Atkins.

Granted, I'm posting mostly out of excitement. Although Olneys blog is dated May 7th, today is the first I've heard of it. And I gotta say, it would be great to get Atkins here, but does anyone think this is awfully far fetched? It just doesn't sound like Shapiro to deal a major league ready pitcher. They traded Kouz for Barfield, who's out in SD playing 3B...they've got Cabrera who will be the SS soon enough, and at 2B Barfield would plug in, hopefully as a leadoff hitter, letting Sizemore hit 2 or 3. Peralta is a decent SS, losing range tho.

Anyone hear this? Opinions? Whatever?

Just trying to get some more info, other indians fans opinions. anyone for that matter.

The Indians have a third basemen waiting in the wings as well, Andy Marte ;-7 :-P

Is it just me or do there appear to be many "their future is near" Top 10 prospects over the past few years that just haven't cut it.

Andy Marte
Andy LaRoche
Ian Stewart
Brandon Wood

And they're all third basemen :-?

Waiting on prospects is like ordering from Overstock.com: It may get there, it may not, but even if it does it's generally completely different from what you've been led to expect.
0-3 to 4-3. Worst choke in the history of baseball. Enough said.

I think Marte is in a class of his own on that list. The others haven't failed nearly as long as he has.

yea, problem with Marte is, he cant go back to AAA. Dude's sitting in the dugout every day. At least Wedge could give him a good run of games to see where he's at right now. He isn't getting anything out of this pace for 80 ABs for the season. For a 36yr old Casey Blake who's contract is about to be up anyway?

And the Indians keep drafting 3B and making them into 1B. we've got a pile of em in the minors, with the only real 3B being the kid we drafted out of GA Tech on 2006, wes hodges.

When I read the title of this post, my initial reaction was "does he mean Native American or from the actual country?" :-B

What about a package of Atkins and Fuentes going over to Cleveland?

I'd say the Rockies could get quite a lot for that.

Andy LaRoche isn't a failure by any stretch of the imagination. His problem is opportunity, not skill.
If the Dodgers stop signing offensive black holes like Nomar, and just give him the job he will be really good. ;-D
