Volquez and Cueto!

Postby RenPastana » Sat May 10, 2008 1:45 pm

Anyone know where I can find how many pitches these young guns have been throwing every time they hit the mound? I read this early this morning and kind of scared me even though i had been expecting to see it:

Per rotoworld:

Excited about Edinson Volquez' hot start and Johnny Cueto's impressive ratios? Just look at how many pitches Dusty Baker is letting them throw this early in the season. Somewhere Mark Prior and Kerry Wood must be cringing with deja vu. Homer Bailey may be lucky to still be in the minors.

Most box scores have those numbers at the bottom under the pitching lines.

Volquez faced 30 batters in his last game and threw 117 pitches (I think). In 7 innings. Weathers and Affeldt each needed 20 pitches to get an inning of work complete.

Screw pitch counts!!

Volquez: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/g ... atsId=7639
Cueto: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/g ... atsId=8172

It's the "PIT" column.

Volquez has gone over 110 only twice and Cueto hasn't even reached 100 many times. I don't think 100+ pitches is that bad. I think it becomes a problem if they end up routinely throwing 110+

Thank you guys! It seems like Dusty is pushing Volquez a whole lot more than Cueto when it comes to pitch count. It must be because of the high # of BB's causing him to take longer to get thru the game. An avg of 100 pitches thrown/outing can't be that bad though...or can it?

Don't just look at pitch count, also look at just how many of those pitches are thrown in high stress situations. If someone's routinely pitching out of the stretch with runners on and in strikeout situations, those 90 pitches are completely different compared to someone that just scatters a few hits over those same 90 pitches.

Good point...I own both Volquez and Cueto...Cueto, in a non-keeper league, as mine is, has no value due to such high ERA so nobody wants him, however Volquez has been a beast, so I am assuming this would be a good time to sell high?

Cueto has no value in a non-keeper? Really - unless its a really shallow league I would love to have his K's on my team. His value certainly takes a hit in non-keeper leagues, but no value is more than a little bit of a stretch.
