Two years ago, Jonny Gomes was one of the hottest young players in the game. This year he's only platooning. What happened and is he worth holding on to?

Three things happened:

1. He played nearly all of 2006 with a hurt shoulder, which helped him play like crap.

2. I think I read somewhere his manager doesn't like him, which I think is true.

3. He is having trouble hitting RHP, but with his sporadic/inconsistent playing time I'd say it'd be hard to really lock in and get on a roll.

He was just on a hot streak back in early 2006. He is nowhere near as good as he showed during those 80 some at bats in April of 2006. The Gomes we have seen since is the real Gomes. Pretty much an all or nothing swing with some walks worked in. Terrible defensively. Probably worth only an occasional spot start against a lefty without a great changeup. Definitely not worth starting against righties at any time.
