Catcher values

Postby Warpigs » Thu Feb 26, 2004 11:28 am

Hey, was wondering what everyone thought of some of the younger catcher values. I just finished a draft where I got I-Rod and picked up Joe Mauer in the last round as backup for Pudge. However, I'm tempted to deal I-Rod and pick up someone like Olivo off waivers or trade for Victor Martinez to platoon with Mauer until one of them become a regular starter for my squad.

Basically, what kind of values do you see for Olivo, Mauer and V. Martinez? Who will be the best value out of the three? I know Oliver can swipe a couple bags, which is nice, but also impressed with their power potential.

it's very tough to tell. every year, some catcher gets hyped as being a big offensive threat, and every year that guy falls flat on his face and hits .245 with 11 HR. all of these guys have nice potential, but all could also bomb. i think the mauer hype machine is going full tilt at this point, inflating his value to the point where i know i wont end up with him in any leagues.

How does the rest of your team look?
If you have holes or need to upgrade in a certain area, then maybe you can move Pudge, because it will be hard to start a league w/ 2 unproven catchers.

You may want to wait a few weeks into the season, and if Mauer is hitting well, and Martinez or Olivo are still available, then you can shop around Pudge.
