You are, but thanks to my inability to word a question right so are the people saying Gehrig and the number 4. It was supposed to be most number of times not most number of clubs. Both 4 and 5 have been retired by 8 clubs (the Reds retired #5 twice).

So I'll give it to whomever gets #4 or #5 quickest with the right player.

#5 has been retired 9 times. First was by the Reds in memory of Willard Hershberger but they reactivated it in 1942 and then retired it again 40 years later for Johnny Bench.
First permantley retired number was Joe Dimaggio of the Yankees in 1952
