Okay, this was the last line in the game recap of the WhiteSox/Twinkies matchup furnished by the AP's Andrews Seligman,
Hernandez, who pitched seven shutout innings against Kansas City on April 11, simply baffled a team that batted just .203 over the previous 11 games and saw its average drop from .247 to .232. He kept the White Sox off balance, even lunging at Eephus pitches.
so, my question is, what in sam hill are, "Eephus pitches"?

It's a very high arching and slow pitch (no spin or knuckle on it, just an intentional lob meant for the hitter to give up on and then land a strike). Someone threw one back in the day (guy might have been named Eephus). I think I remember my dad telling me he threw one to Ted Williams and he crushed it.
rip sewall threw it to the splendid splinter in an early 50s allstar game, i think...ted knocked it about 475 feet...luis tiant threw one every now and then along w/his hesitation pitch and el duque has thrown the eephus recently..dave laroche used to throw it too

huh, i guess if el duque is throwing it too, then it's running in the family.

Why did Livan throw one the other day or something?
I think Galarraga for Det threw one to Ortiz yesterday (might have been a real slow curve, I only saw a quick highlight).
yeah, the original post had a quote from the Twins/Sox game last night, and the author described Livan getting the Sox to lunge at "eephus pitches"; that was the reason for my question.
