Who are the players that you can think of that weren't projected to be great in the big leagues but have? (Let's keep it to bats)

Hanley Ramirez.
He was a "name" and he was touted as good, but his minor league numbers were pretty un-sexy.
He's definitely one from a numbers perspective.
Whoever lit a fire under him in Florida needs to be touted as a genius.

That's really quite eerie. The first player that came to mind was Hanley as well. Not becuase people didn't expect big things out of him, but I don't think anyone expected the 30+ HRs.
But really, though. I thought I would have been the only one in the world to have answered H Ramirez to the question posed, and I thought better and moved on. Strange.

Mike Piazza is the poster boy for players coming out of nowhere. Drafted in the 62nd round as a 'favor' to Piazza's relative. Became arguably the 2nd best hitting catcher of all time.

Sammy Sosa. Early in his career with the Rangers he was too small and couldn't hit for enough power to be a ML outfielder.
